Custom BBQ Island vs. Kit: Which One Fits Your Backyard Best?
Designing your dream outdoor kitchen starts with a big decision: custom-built BBQ island or ready-to-install kit? I’ve worked with many California homeowners who enjoy year-round outdoor living, and the answer usually comes down to budget, style, and function. Here’s what you need to know.
Custom BBQ Islands: Tailored, But Pricey

A custom island gives you complete freedom. You can choose every finish, layout, and appliance to fit your style—whether that’s modern and sleek or rustic with stone veneer. Want bar-height seating, an extended countertop, or a spot for a sink or fridge? No problem.
But all that customization comes at a cost. A fully built-in island with stone or stucco, gas lines, electrical, and custom counters can start around $12,000–$25,000+, depending on size and materials. For many of my clients, that just isn’t in the budget.
BBQ Kits: Smart, Stylish, and Budget-Friendly
Today’s BBQ kits have come a long way. Many now include high-quality grills, storage, and attractive finishes that mimic a custom look—at a fraction of the cost. Most kits fall in the $3,000–$8,000 range, with options to add modular components over time.

The biggest drawback? Kits are less flexible. You may not find the exact layout or features you want—like extended countertops for bar seating. Still, for many homeowners, it’s a smart way to create a functional, great-looking space without overspending.
Durability & Maintenance
Wind, rain and durability matters. Custom islands can use higher-end materials that last longer, but they’re also harder to modify if something breaks. Kits often use modular parts that are easier to replace down the line—something my clients with kids, pets, or heavy grill use appreciate.
Bottom Line
If your budget allows, a custom island offers a one-of-a-kind outdoor kitchen experience. But if you’re looking to balance style, function, and cost, a BBQ kit might be your best bet—especially with the many great-looking options available today.
