Different plants require specific ratios of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium (N-P-K). Leafy greens need high nitrogen, while fruiting and root vegetables require higher phosphorus and potassium. Always combine compost to enrich your soil with an N-P-K fertilizer suited to the plant’s growth stage.
The best fertilizer combinations are categorized by plant type:
1. Fruiting Vegetables (Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplant, Squash)
- Nutrient Needs: Balanced or High-Potassium/Phosphorus
- Ideal Ratios: 5-10-10, 8-16-16, or balanced 10-10-10
- Best Combination: Mix an all-purpose organic granular blend (like Espoma Garden-Tone) into the soil at planting, then supplement with a water-soluble tomato or bloom fertilizer once they begin flowering.
2. Leafy Greens & Brassicas (Lettuce, Spinach, Kale, Broccoli, Cabbage)
- Nutrient Needs: High Nitrogen
- Ideal Ratios: 10-10-10, 16-16-16, or pure nitrogen sources
- Best Combination: Work in a balanced organic granular fertilizer when planting, and combine with a nitrogen-rich liquid booster like fish emulsion every 2-3 weeks to promote lush, rapid leaf growth.
- 3. Root Vegetables (Carrots, Potatoes, Beets, Onions, Garlic)
- Nutrient Needs: Low Nitrogen, High Phosphorus & Potassium
- Ideal Ratios: 5-10-10, 6-24-24, or 0-10-10
- Best Combination: Use bone meal for phosphorus to build strong roots. Combine it with wood ashes or a potassium-heavy granular fertilizer at planting. Avoid excess nitrogen, which produces bushy tops but stunted roots.
- 4. General Garden Edibles & Herbs
- Nutrient Needs: Balanced and mild
- Ideal Ratios: 3-4-2, 14-14-14, or 4-4-4
- Best Combination: Top-dress with a slow-release granular product (like Osmocote Flower & Vegetable) combined with organic compost to feed your soil consistently for up to 4 months.
